extracting what matters from

black liquor

Black Liquor” is a by-product of the pulp used to create paper at mills that use trees as a raw material. The Kraft process is used in the manufacturing of industrial paper, in which wood is converted into wood pulp and then into paper. This process, however, produces a toxic waste, “black liquor”

Lignin extraction from black liquor

our focus

creating a better world

Black liquor is made up of lignin, hemicellulose, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and sodium sulphide (Na2S). The lignin component in Black Liquor can be used to generate biofuel, however this fuel is not widely used because it can be expensive to generate.

Until the invention of recovery boilers in the early 20th century, the toxic waste was often simply released into waterways contaminating the water resource. Thanks to recovery boilers, paper manufacturers were able to recover and reuse inorganic chemicals, as well as extract energy from pulping residues.

The pulp and paper industry plays an important role in the global economic cluster. The paper and forest cluster is a global economic hub generating more than $11.48 Billion in annual revenue in India alone.

A pulp mill that produces bleached kraft pulp generates 1.7-1.8 tonnes of black liquor (measured as dry content) per tonne of pulp. Worldwide, the pulp and paper industry currently processes about 170 million tonnes of black liquor (measured as dry solids) per year. Each pulp mill in the US produces 6 million lbs of it daily.
